Bizimana Gilbert “P Diddy”

P Diddy is 21 years old. He lives with his grandmother in the same poor area of Kacyiru. He only has a mother and grandmother but his mother is out of his life. His father was killed in the genocide in 1994 as well as his grandfather.

He was able to go to school because his neighbor was a teacher and he urged him to go to school. He would sneak around when the leaders of the school would ask who had not paid so he could avoid paying his fees while still attending school. He would hide under the chairs to avoid being caught. When he was in third grade the government started to help the people affected by the genocide. From then on his school was paid for.

When he was 13 he figured out that he had a hernia. He began doing drugs because of the pain of his hernia and the pain of being hungry. They couldn’t afford to go to a hospital, and as time went on his whole situation worsened. They would close their doors and cry because they couldn’t eat. He began doing drugs because of the pain of his hernia and the pain of not eating. He had a friend that would help him eat sometimes and he was the main factor in his drug usage. In high school he became even worse. His drug usage and a new habit of thievery began to drive his life into a much worse place. His grandmother had no compassion and didn’t try to help them at all. He and his brother left his mother to try to find more of a life in the city. The government would occasional help them with food or support but it wasn’t often. His whole family was in shambles. He was forced to find his own life and his own way when he turned 20.

This past year has been very hard on him. He stays with his grandmother because he has nowhere else to go. She slanders him with hateful words and verbally disowns him often. Sometimes he goes without food for several days at a time and none of his family that he is still in contact seems to care.

He got saved in 2011 through the Young Life ministry. Because of his situation he can be very discouraged by his situation. It is very hard. He has stopped using drugs and has stopped stealing. He feels the pressure of drugs when he is in rough moments but he is able to stay clean through the support of his friends. He is struggling to find a job. If he had a job he would be able to leave a house filled with hatred and be able to feed himself every so often as we as be able to help others in bad situations. He doesn’t have a preference ; he would just like to be able to support himself. His favorite bible verse is john 3:16.
